Once Khan is defeated and the anti-violence field snaps back into place, Adia hurries to Steve’s apartment to check on the three pokemon who live there. They would have had an excellent view of the destruction, even though the neighborhood is thankfully undamaged. Adia can only imagine how anxious they are, cooped up all day with no way to check on Steve.

She wishes that she had better news to bring them.

The superintendent is in his office — a small blessing. He gives Adia a spare key, and she uses it to unlock Steve’s door. She barely has it open before Sarah comes barreling through, knocking her over and barking excitedly in greeting.

“H-hey!” Adia laughs despite herself and half-pets, half-pushes at the growlithe who is now whining and licking her face. “Easy, Sarah. It’s good to see you, too.”

Ethel plods into view and lets out a sharp, metallic bark of annoyance at Sarah, nudging the dog-like creature off so that Adia can get back on her feet. Undeterred, Sarah trots down the hallway, looking for Steve and whining when she doesn’t see him.

Adia thanks Ethel quietly and dusts herself off. “Sarah, come back into the apartment with us, okay? I have something to tell you.” She steps inside and looks around; someone has knocked the pillows off the couch and there is a chewed-up drawing pad on the floor, but no fires or holes in the wall. That’s good. She spots Bucky perched at his usual spot on top of the bookshelves and gives him a whistle, but he makes no move to fly to her, his gaze wary.

Sarah bustles pasts her and sits down next to Ethel. Adia shuts the door and takes a moment to breathe slowly before facing three sets of attentive, worried eyes.

“There was a bad man in the Nexus today,” she begins. “He was hurting a lot of people and destroying their homes, too. Steve went to help. He was very brave, but the bad man hurt him. Badly.” Her voice catches, but she swallows down her trembling. As keenly as she feels Steve’s loss, it must be so much worse for the devoted animals before her. “Steve’s friends are doing everything they can to make him better, but they had to take him to another world to do it. He’s going to be there a while… more than a few weeks, probably. I’m sorry.”

Ethel lets out a soft, sad gasp and Sarah whimpers in disbelief. But it is Bucky who reacts the strongest, screeching in outrage and taking flight in a flurry of feathers. He slams into the door and scrabbles at the doorknob with his talons, determined to find Steve and help him, or at least find the bad man who hurt him and make him pay for what he’s done.

Adia winces and moves to intervene, worried that Bucky will injure himself. “Bucky, please don’t. Steve is already gone.” But the bird pokemon ignores her, calling out to Sarah to help him with the door. Sarah gets up, but pauses halfway to the door. She looks between human and rufflet anxiously, unsure of whose direction to follow.

It is Ethel who is the voice of reason. She stands next to Adia and rumbles something that sounds like her name over and over. Whatever she says, it calms Bucky. He stops scratching at the door and perches on couch’s armrest instead, turning his back to everyone so that he can sulk in peace.

“I’m sorry,” Adia says again, knowing full well how useless those words are. “I wish we could help, too.” She sits down on the couch and Bucky turns to glare at her, then blinks when he catches sight of the bruise on her face. Chirruping softly, he shuffles closer for a better look, then gently touches her cheek with his beak. She’s hurt, too.

Adia smiles softly and tentatively strokes Bucky’s back, brushing a few errant feathers back into place. “I’m okay.” She looks down at Ethel and Sarah, who have crowded against her legs and are watching her in concern. “It’ll be okay. I’ll look after you, and I’ll try to get ahold of Candela or another pokemon trainer who can help us. You won’t be alone.”

That seems to appease all three pokemon, who settle against her quietly. Adia bites her lip, fighting off the urge to cry. It means a lot that they would put their trust in her, especially Bucky, who has nestled so close to her that his feathers are tickling her face. “Let’s all try our best and work together so things will be nice when Steve comes home.”

If he comes home, but she keeps that traitorous thought to herself.
